SDC Shootout Revisited
Back in April '08 we had the
opportunity to gather a bunch of the world's
finest small diaphragm microphones in one
place and have a listen to them
all.
Five small diaphragm condenser mics were used to
record a Takamine acoustic guitar. In
alphabetical order they were AKG 451, AKG 460,
Mercenary Audio KM69, Nuemann KM184 and a
Sennheiser 416 ( all cardioid )
With my good friend Kev Amos, an acoustic guitar and eight channels of Focusrite mic preamplifiers we made a number of test recordings. This shootout was originally posted to Gearslutz in a blind listening test - the names of the mics were not revealed - and the thread was eventually viewed over two thousand times.
While this is not the worlds most scientific comparison we thought it was worth posting here for posterity.
You can download the files here and read the methodology .pdf for the details. The .pdf also contains the take list so you can find out which microphone was which.
